Huawei Ascend W1

Yesterday, I was at the launch of Huawei’s Windows 8 smartphone called the “Ascend W1″.

It was a pretty intimate event at the PBCom Bldg. in Makati with select people from media together with Huawei and Microsoft executives.

When I was invited to attend, I was given prior information that this particular device was going to be positioned to target the lower-end market.  This actually made it quite interesting for me considering the onslaught of dirt-cheap Android devices that have overrun the country.  It is high time that a Windows Phone 8 should emerge within the same price bracket to mix it up with the rest of ‘em.

Most, if not all Windows 8 devices in the market are still quite pricey which makes it a tad difficult for those who find the new Microsoft smartphone OS enticing but are held back due to its cost.

The Huawei Ascend W1 is perhaps the answer to that problem.

With a 5-Megapixel Rear Camera with LED Flash, a 1.2GHz Dual-Core Snapdragon Processor, an impressive screen display, a 1950mAh battery which they claim can last over a day on heavy use, and so much more, the Huawei Ascend W1 seems like a wonderful meld of smartphone features and affordability – and it retails for only (ready?) Php 8,990.00.

Zarzuela

What is great food exactly?

It’s a pretty tough question if you really think about it.  Of course, it has to taste great, no doubt.  But great food is also somewhat relative.  For example… ampalaya dishes aren’t appealing to me at all, but my wife and my father adores food cooked with this vegetable.

So, great food isn’t just determined by mere taste.

If you ask me, great food can be defined as, “a dish that not only tastes great, but invokes wonderful memories, experiences, and brings out a sense of nostalgia the moment you partake of it.”

As much as it is “sensorial”, it is also very much “experiential”.

Not a lot of restaurants can claim to have dishes like these.  But one restaurant my family and I have recently been to, does.  And I just have to share it with all of you…

Introducing, “Zarzuela”.

The wonderful people behind Zarzuela: (L-R) Juanito & Trina Imperial, Raquel Sian-Estrella, Mel Dumlao and Owen Gan

Zarzuela is a fairly new restaurant which is located at the 6/F East Wing of Shangri-La Plaza, Mandaluyong City, which serves different kinds of Filipino dishes hailing from different provinces in the country such as Negros, Bicol, Quezon, and Pangasinan.  Most of the items on their menu are food that the owners of this wonderful new establishment have grown up enjoying.

InnerExile Odyssey 5

I love how my iPhone 5 looks. I love it to bits! Any iPhone 5 owner would probably tell you that, if not for the risk of accidentally dropping (or banging) their own unit, it would really be swell to carry this device commando-style. Why? Because the iPhone 5 looks so damn handsome on its own.

But, the reality is that the iPhone 5 is susceptible to little knicks and scratches. Not good at all. The natural thing to do is immediately head over to a smartphone accessory shop and purchase a protector for your device so you can somehow have a little bit more peace of mind.

It’s true… an iPhone 5 casing/protector isn’t just a fashion statement. It’s a necessity especially if you care dearly for your phone.

The question now is this: Is there some sort of middle ground wherein a protector can be just as functional in “protecting” yet not as flashy as to take away from the actual beauty of the iPhone 5′s form factor?

The answer is YES.

Enter, the InnerExile Odyssey 5 Aluminum Bumper. It is everything you’d want from an iPhone 5 protector – strong, sleek, sturdy… without the overly flashy, colorful designs of typical iPhone 5 casings being sold all over.

InnerExile describes their Odyssey 5 Aluminum Bumper as follows:

Laureate of 2013 Gold Pin Design Award, odyssey 5 provides full protection to your iPhone with elegance design. odyssey 5 aluminum bumper not only protects your iPhone from shocks and scratches, but also provides a unique and elegant design. odyssey 5 comes with stylish various back covers to match your taste and style. With our patent snap lock design, odyssey 5 doesn’t need tools, takes only seconds to assemble. Take your iPhone to another level of protection with odyssey 5.

The Braven BRV-1 Wireless HD Speaker (Speakerphone/Phone Charger)

Every now and then you chance upon a gadget/electronic accessory that is amazingly versatile as it is handsome… a gadget that’s worth every single penny you spent because of how useful and dependable it is.

One such device is the Braven BRV-1 Wireless HD Speaker (Speakerphone/Charger).

There are countless portable speakers in the market these days and none of them, in my opinion, comes close to the BRV-1 in terms of versatility.

Just how versatile? Let me count the ways…

Wrong Ramen is Ramen Done Right

My family and I recently checked out a restaurant amusingly called, WRONG RAMEN, located in Burgos Circle at The Fort.

I’ll tell you this… I hardly fall for Oriental noodle dishes. The only time I fell absolutely in love with something like this was when I tried out RAMEN BAR at Robinson’s Magnolia a few months ago (you can check out my review on Ramen Bar by clicking here).

Wrong Ramen

Anyways, here we were… right in front of the establishment. Ours was a mixed feeling of excitement and hunger (yes, we really look forward to new food spot adventures with much enthusiasm).

As we entered the place, the only thing on my mind was the hope that WRONG RAMEN’s dishes would at least taste just as good as RAMEN BAR’s offerings so as to keep me a happy camper.

Ok… before we get to our orders, lemme address the obvious question that’s just begging to be answered – “Why on Earth would this restaurant be called WRONG RAMEN?”

Accutone Audio

I love music. Especially music you can bring along. That’s why my iPhone 5 is loaded with all sorts of tracks.

I make sure to convert my music tracks to compressed formats with sampling rates and resolutions that, as much as possible, preserves its original lossless (raw) quality.

It’s the audiophile in me, I guess. Being a sound engineer, it’s difficult to ignore artifacts that are unavoidably brought about by converting raw music formats into lossy ones.

But, keep in mind… No matter how crystal clear your music sounds, it is ONLY JUST AS GOOD as what your output device can deliver.

Take headphones/earphones, for example. It makes no sense stuffing your portable music player with huge, barely uncompressed files, if your earpiece cannot faithfully reproduce the music. It’s like watching a Blu-Ray movie on a regular CRT monitor – it doesn’t make any sense.

I cannot stress it enough… invest in good quality headphones and earphones. Why? Because it matters.

Good earphones don’t have to be pricey. In fact, there are some really amazing sounding earpieces in the market that will barely even make a dent on your budget.

And forget about those imitation “Beats” headphones being sold in bangketa markets for merely a fifth of the original’s real value. Because they’re imitations, you can be sure that quality, workmanship and materials have been compromised.

If you’re in the market for a pair of great-sounding yet affordable earphones, Accutone products are a good place to start.

Accutone EarphonesI currently have 2 Accutone earphones which I usually bring along during events and activities. Which model I bring depends on the mood I’m in during that day and the activity I am doing.
